To the left are screen grabs from the establishing and closing shots of Miley Cyrus' When I Look At You video. Since this song was made for the soundtrack of the movie The Last Song all of the information about the song is placed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. This song is from Miley Cyrus' EP The Time Of Our Lives which included the successful songs Party In The USA and The Climb There is an arial shot over a river in California which sets the context of both the movie and music video.
The closing shot of this narrative video is beautifully set out with a medium close up of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth embracing. The natural lighting is perfect as the suns rays come in between their faces making it look like it is linking them together. They don't break eye contact either which establishes that they are completely in love with each other.

There are many long shots within this video which adheres to the conventions of a music video which is made for a movie. This is because it makes it easier to add in scenes from the movie to merge with the song. For example the scenes at the beach or on the pier shows the setting is the same in both mediums. Intertextuality is shown too since the singer (Miley) is the main actress in the movie so her love interest is able to interact with her as she is singing like the shot to the right.
This fade transition between shots works well as it transforms a long shot of Miley playing the piano into a medium close up of her singing, this also shows she is multi talented by having the piano on display. The piano is also very oddly placed as they are usually kept in concert halls or at least inside. By having the grand piano outside it creates a powerful image that Miley is singing out to the world instead of being confined to just one room.
This is kind of a half over the shoulder shot mixed with a medium shot. She isn't looking directly at the lens which suggests that she is looking at the boy. The mise en scene is good here also even though it is blurry because the red suggests passion
It is very effective by having a close up shot of Miley playing the piano as it syncs perfectly with the music. We could use a shot like this in our music video if we need to fill in a gap since it is very useful to break up scenes as well.
In this shot Liam Hemsworth is left of frame whilst Miley is right of frame. She is blurred as she plays the piano and the image of Liam is very clear. This directs the attention of the audience to Liam who is gazing at Miley, obviously showing he's in love
They used a long shot in order showcase he beautiful landscape behind Miley. This emphasizes the stormy weather which is an example of pathetic fallacy. As the storm gets stronger, so does Miley's emotions.
This close up shot is also very effective and is one of the shots that really stood out to me. Miley Cyrus is an ex-country singer and by having a pull focus on her stood in a wheat field it helps create a rural tone to the song. A huge component of this song and the soundtrack of this movie is the setting in the countryside and beach which is why it was so important to include one of these natural shots in the music video.
I would class this shot as an over the shoulder shot as well as a close up as you can see Miley's expression and love represented by the way she is caressing him as they dance. By including this shot it further shows the developing love between the two actors.
This shot is not only taken at a low angle but also rotates around Miley showing her happiness and overjoy. By positioning the camera lower than her it shows her power and the extent of love she is feeling.
I like this transition a lot since it looks as though Liam is looking at her and then blinks. It is at a canted angle and gives off the impression that the audience is looking through Liam's eyes as he lies on the beach wit Miley. This gives them a personal look at the relationship by letting them see that he sees.
The shot before the closing shot for this music video is a close up, high angle shot of Liam writing "forever" on Miley's shoe. This would be very appealing to audiences as it provides an eternal equilibrium to their relationship and although the music video is coming to an end it illustrates that their relationship will be everlasting.
