Conclusions of Research

Camera Shots, Angles and Movement

In one of my first videos which I analysed "Hold Up" by Beyonce, I love how the amera acted like a person in the crowd watching her every move. This is quite a powerful way of working/moving the camera since it brings the watcher of the music video their own view and gives them more of an insight to the setting as if they were there in the video. A mix of high angles and low angles were used to establish her dominance and a point of view shot with a high angle to suggest an onlooker is watching her.

From some of the establishing shots I found that a lot of music videos start out with a title screen which show the title and possibly the name of the artist as well, for example in Ariana Grande's video for "Into You". The font style and colour is very important here as it plays a part in showing your stars image. Ariana Grange has a pink, serif font for her title since she is a young, classy "girly-girl".

From my research of Adele's video for "Hello" I found that close ups and extreme close ups can be very effective. In alot of shots, the camera men cleverly held the camera at a high angle in a close up shot in order to show the reflection of light on Adele's teardrop, highlighting the fact she is devastated about her relationship.

Mise En Scene

The mise en scene of Beyonce's "Hold Up" video is great as it represents her setting very well. Since it is set in New Orleans there are many small cafe's in the background of most of her shots with waiters wearing work clothes and children playing with balls in the street. All of this goes together to show that as Beyonce is feeling disrespected and is dancing in the street, the rest of the world is continuing on as usual.

Editing

The transitions in most of the videos I researched were very subtle. On occasion they involved a cleverly placed blur or wipe but most transitions just cut straight into the next which in my opinion looks more professional. However if we do this in our video we will have to be very precise since it only looks good if it cuts exactly on the beat of the music.
