Music Video Research 2 (Gonna Get over You)
Gonna Get over You is one of Sara Bareilles most watched music videos according to YouTube. This video has helped me get so many ideas from different camera angles to outfit changes.
When Sara Bareilles enters the video she is driving a ruby red Cadillac convertible, one of the most famous cars from the 1970's which syncronises with her dated leather jacket outfit which looks like it came straight from the 1978 movie Grease. The lyrics to the song don't really match to a specific time period which is probably why Bareilles used it as an opportunity to bring in some conventional 70's styles.
Her makeup throughout the video stays the same as well as her costume in order to make the video feel as if it was filmed continuously without any pauses or breaks although it was due to the many scene transitions. Bareilles makeup is a style we could base the makeup around for our star as it is very bold and gives off an indie rock vibe, perfect for Bareilles other song Gravity.
I found it unusual that the video was mostly set in a Mexican supermarket. It's quite unconventional to have an iconic mexican themed shot in the middle of a india/pop video. She uses costumes to illustrate the Mexican stereotype as well as the men standing in front of their countries flags, however as Perking said "Stereotypes are not simple". This mise-en-scene brings more diversity to the video as well as making it fun and unique. Maybe we could incorporate a stereotype into our music video too.
As you can see, a lot of the video contains a dance routine which is a convention in an upbeat pop music video. Bareilles also has back-up dancers from which she picked up from the street scene and the supermarket. The males and females are all wearing the same costume with similar hairstyles so that it establishes the genre and no divide in gender, as Sara Bareillies is a strong believer in equality.
